I always wonder when I see "devils spit", black inactive rust, what is really under it when it's on a bevel. Done my share of Swiss cheese bevels because of those pesky black rust spots. Sometimes it takes a fair bit of honing and metal to get past it and set a decent bevel. Can be a royal pita.
