Yep. I saw what good shape this DD is in and thought I would see if I could win it. Between this one and the new Bow razor, I'm trying to decide if I want to try honing them... Or send them to a pro.

You know the pin might well be bent. I noticed upon closer inspection that the tip of the scales above the pivot pin do not line up perfectly. They aren't off by a lot... But just a hair. Does that mean the pin needs to be replaced?

Well Dave, if you have some hones, I hope you have some good ones like Naniwa or Shapton but Naniwa's are cheaper. Get you a Naniwa Chosera 1k for setting bevels & then get some cheaper Naniwa's for the rest of your honing. I have bought mine from here ☛

Sharpening Supplies - Sharpen Your Knives and Tools With The Right Supplies

    Here's the Naniwa Chosera's, a 1k is $80.99 ☛

    Naniwa Professional Stone (New Chosera)

And the here are some good Naniwa's that are cheaper like the 5 stone kit with a universal stone holder, 220, 1k 3k, 8k &12k for $299.99 ☛

5 Stone Naniwa Sharpening Stone Kit

You will need a lapping plate too. I started out with a DMT Dia-Flat 95 but they are $189.00 ☛

    DMT Dia-Flat 95 Lapping Plate

I later got some extra spending money & bought me a good one, a Shapton but they are $379.00
Shapton's are good stones but they cost more. If you don't want to spend that much on a lapping plate they have stone flatteners like this one for $23.99 but it is a smaller one, 6-11/16 x 2-1/8 x 1-1/8 ☛

    Naniwa Flattening Stone

    Or this one which is larger, 300MM x 150MM x 20MM for $69.99 ☛

    Extra Large Naniwa Flattening Stone

It all is in how much you want to spend but for now you might want to send those two out to be professionally honed & look on eBay for a good one you can practice with when you start to learn how to hone.

If you aren't happy with the pin, you can get some pinning material off the bay & go here to learn ☛

Here's another place to learn but this is all in the Library ☛

If you are no hurry one way to see if the pin is bent is just give it some time and use. If the alignment comes and goes then it is a bent pin.

Had this on a Shumate with faux tortoise scales with NiAg bolsters /pins. Wanted to save them and knew getting the pin out was very risky. Sent it to Glen. Better safe than sorry. Good luck.

That is a very nice piece.

A beaut of a razor but I hate to see razor edges resting on hard objects.

If you can open and close it without hitting the sides and it is not loose you are okay. You may start to put a new pin in it only to find it's the hole in the tang. First rule , If it works don't fix it :<0)

Nice waterfowl there. 'Have one that's almost identical - needs a bath.

For reference, the GoldenEdge is the full hollow version, averaging about .010 thick, measured 1/8" above the bevel. The SatinEdge is the more extra hollow, averaging about .075. 'Both wonderful.

For those on a budget that just HAVE to have a Duck, there's model that's the same blade as the GoldenEdge in thickness, but a shorter cutting edge length (I prefer). From Pearl Duck, its the "Special #1". From Bres Duck, its the Dwarf. The scales are usually not fancy. I've seen 2 and 3-pin versions.

Thanks to our Honorable MrSell for making me aware of the smaller cousins. I like mine alot.

No, the blade opens and closes on its own. The edge will catch on the scales as well, if you don't center it by hand. It is definitely too loose.
