I'm not sure about the etch being saved, that is way beyond my skill level to determine.
Webster was a celebrated lawyer, orator, and U.S. Senator. In fiction he defended a farmer who sells his soul to the devil in a American retelling of Faust.

I just came across a footnote about Wade and Butcher putting Daniel Webster's last words "I still live" on razors in Thoreaus journal entry for Dec 3, 1856. The journal entry is titled Concord Countrymen and Thoreau is admiring his rural neighbors (partly because they didn't shoot at him when he crossed their fields even though they all owned rifles).
