Ivory is better than bone any way.
Should I send it out to get restored or just get it shave ready?
I would strongly suggest that it be sent to a known and confident hone and renewal person. It is too nice to be hacked by a low count purveyor of edges.

Those scales can crack at the pin in an instant!!! Do not, for any reason try to get the blade further into the scales than it just sets. Be very careful in packaging for the same reason!

Perhaps someone may send you a PM of persons they trust. Check their post count also.

It took me years to find a blade of that quality and so I am very protective toward yours.

    Sincerely
    ~Richard

I totally agree! I do think it is Ivory & yes, Ivory is way better than bone. I would definitely send it to a pro to be honed.

Very interesting that you bring that up. I have the distinct impression that the incredible finish on my Mappin is nickel plating.

I'm sure it's plated, here is a pic of a square piece fallen off. Microscope shows sharp edges of a coating on the blade.
