Spring 1888 Theo Kochs Barber Supply Catalog
This is a treasure-trove of historical information.
Everything a barber needed, with price lists and information.
It includes listings for 14" Belgian hones, a variety of razors, brushes, strops, chairs, furniture, soaps, and even regrinding services (with an illustration of their workshop).
Hone prices haven't changed that much relatively. Bear in mind, a razor cost about $1.50 or $2 for a fancy one.
It's interesting to note that even in 1888 they had no wedge razors, and nothing larger than 7/8.
The workshop is especially fascinating! This was dedicated to regrinding razors and scissors. On the left, seated at something similar to a Sheffield-style horsing, are the men grinding scissors. On the right, working German-style (IE, standing) are the men grinding razors. Also take note of the pegboard with different sized stones.
Follow the link at the top to see the complete list of regrinding services and prices!-Zak Jarvis. Writer. Artist. Bon vivant.
