Happy Camper Flea Market Finds
Although not "steal" prices, but yet still purdy durned inexpensive, I came away from the local market pretty happy. A W&B for Barber's Use 15/16 with a very pristine blade, and a J. Champon, Sheffield 7/8 wedge in really good shape, and a C?rater Guard Razor Co., Constantine, Michigan hone in pretty good condition. May go back for a W&B Masonic and large F. Reynolds frameback. Same guy has a nice Wostie too......decisions, decisions. About at the end of the funds jar.
Any guesses on the age of the Champon would be appreciated. It has an interesting repair at the back of the pivot. The W&B has been scratched names as shown, but I find it interesting that there are two names and not that much evident wear. Go figure. They have been photoed, and unless they are somebody's relative, will soon disappear.

Thanked: 4827I try to same the scratched in names as much as possible. I think it is part of the history of the blade and it is kind of intriguing. It looks like a good haul. I am going for a road trip in May, perhaps I will score something nice as well.

Thanked: 1184Nice finds for sure but,,,your doing it all wrong and the funds are running out. First you find an old shot gun for sale. Then pick up everything else you want on the way out :<0) Don't dilly dally either.
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

Depends on who has the razor in their hand at the moment as to what the price might be.....

Certainly a nice haul, my good man! I've no idea by how much, but the J. Champon does look fairly old... sorry that I'm no help with that.
Though, I must contest your intention to remove the names scratched into the scales of the W&B. As said above, it's part of the history of the blade. Personally speaking, I'd feel obligated to leave them for the simple fact that the blade was obviously well cared for. It would be a reminder to myself that this razor was used & loved by generations before me, telling me to treat it with the same level of respect. Then there is the worry of buffing/sanding the scale material too thin if un-pinned; or uneven thicknesses from middle to end if left whole. Grain of salt: it might be an overstatement to call my restoration skills "novice"... .
Oh, and the repair at pivot end could be some sort of traditional natural glue...? I know a lot of glue "way back when" was made from hooves and/or bones from bovine & horses. It would make sense to use a glue made from the same source animal as the horn scales.
I'll stop boring you with my spit-balling. I wish I could get that lucky with local finds!Decades away from full-beard growing abilities.

I like the hone. Constantine is a very small town about 45 min. from me.
