Mappin Brothers gentlemans set in ivory
I was going to title this page ‘The day the eBay gods smiled on me’. Buy it now $39.99 and free shipping. I didn’t even read the description before clicking the buy button. An amazing pair of razors they have never been honed. Even the leather case is excellent. Almost qualifies for NOS. The blades are 6/8 near wedge with glazed finished faces and crocus finished spines and tangs. The makers mark is etched into the tang and since it wraps around the tang at an even depth it was applied after the tang was finish polished. I thought that was interesting. The tangs also have lower jimps. The scales speak for themselves and are flawless.
Mappin Brothers was sold to John Lawrence Langman and William Gibson who were partners in Goldsmiths and Silversmith Co. of Reagent St. London. In 1890 the Mappin Brothers showroom was moved to Cheapside. Note the address in the case.Since there is no England stamp I’m guessing these date 1890 – 1891.
