Default Newest find: Imperial Razor, Germania Cutlery Works

Came across this razor at an antique shop today quite reasonably priced. It's in great condition and looks like it will be a great shaver. We'll see once I get it on the hones.

My Imperial is a great shaver. You will enjoy the shave.

My Germania Oxford may have the best edge of all my blades. Germania makes a very high quality product.

Thanks everyone - It looked good and I really didn't know it's value until I got home and started searching. Going to take a while to set the bevel on my Naniwa 1K - it's pretty dull. Spent some time on it last night but still not there on the bevel.

Looking forward to tomorrow's shave with the new find.

Two layers of tape and some light hands on the Naniwa 1K got it shaving arm hair tonight. A little quality time on the 4K Norton - actually a lot of quality time on the 4K before I was happy with the scratch pattern. There's still some horizontal scratches high up on the bevel that were there when I got it - maybe from some sandpaper the previous owner used or something. The tape has likely changed the bevel angle enough to work the scratches off the new bevel but leave them higher up on the bevel. I don't think they'll be a problem but I could be wrong.

Spent some time on the Norton 8K, then on to the Naniwa 12K, and a nice finish with just water on the Thurnigian. Stropped on a CROX pasted felt strip and on to the leather in the morning.

Looking forward to tomorrow's shave - we'll see if I did as well as I think I did on the hones. The shave is the test.

The verdict is in - not the closest shave but that could be me just getting use to a "new to me" razor. In terms of comfort and feel - the shave was great.

Pre-shave oil prep, a little Proraso red lathered up in my shave scuttle with an Edwin Jager best badger brush. Smooth as silk shave with no irritation - WTG, XTG, ATG - all very comfortable. This razor has a wicked tip on it that actually sticks out a little bit further than the spine - perhaps I was a little too careful with it and that's the reason for the slightly less than BBS results in the tougher spots. I've been caught before with my Ralf Aust tip - pretty good slice - so I was probably just overly cautious with this new one until I'm use to it.

Many users dull the toe on the underside of a window sill (wood sills).
    Nothing wrong with that.

Third time is a charm! First time with two layers of tape I thought I had the bevel set (first shave demonstrated that I did not). Second shave confirmed it wasn't the technique - it was the honing.

Back to the hones and worked all the way through the progression again. Couldn't get it shaving arm hair satisfactorily. Put it up for a week or two and tried again tonight. Went with two layers of tape and spent an awful long time on the 1K, an equally long time on the 4K. Back to the 1K and added a J stroke and eased up on the pressure as I went along for what seemed like an eternity! Got it shaving arm hair on the 1K finally. Worked it out on the 4K changing the tape every time I moved to a new stone. 8K, 12K and finished on the thury. Little CROX on a felt strip and ready for a stropping in the morning.

I wonder if this steel is just super hard - it seemed to take 2 or 3 times as long as normal on each hone. I sure hope I got it this time!
