Thanked: 77Antique mall find... possible cell rot and 50 year old soap
I found these at a antique mall today and figured I'd get a few opinions. The first is a straight razor with possible cell rot. The guy had three razors in the case and I didn't want to buy any of them because of the chance of it spreading.

Thanked: 77The next interesting thing I sound was a shave mug and brush with some old shaving soap still in it. I'm actually kind of curious if the soap would still be good but I'm not real eager to try it either.

It looks like rot to me by the residue of 'stuff' in the scales. I had a Wester Bros Manganese Steel that began to rot and there were puddles of a liquid looking substance on the inside of the scales. The back side looks like it is beginning to show the corrosive effects. As for the 'shaving' mug ........ looks like an old coffee cup with a puck of soap in it to me. $24.00 is about $23.00 too much IMHO.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 77If you think the $24 cup and brush was bad. He wanted $60 for the razor cell rot and all.

That is way too much for both of those items! The razor's blade looks salvageable but the scales look shot due most likely to cell rot as you mentioned.

Congrats on a nice haul! I would try the soap. But then again I'm the type of person that will eat wild mushrooms based on a picture and a guess.
Don't try the soap.

Oops sorry, I guess I should pay more attention when I read the post next time... I agree that the prices asked were high. Often there seems to be no rhyme or reason at antique stores. I've seen broken no-name blades on the same shelf as some good condition Sheffield blades. The dealer was asking $20 for the Sheffields and $35 for the broken blades. [emoji13]
