Default Found one at the store

I found this at one of the local antiques stores a couple days ago. It's a little rough with the old wood homemade scales on there and the edge of the blade sticks out through the bottom when closed. But, the price was right so I picked it up. No real pitting on the steel and the maker's mark is very light on one side. I think it's John Shaw? My plan is to clean it up and use it one of these days - it's in line behind a few others.

Nice looking blade! The spine wear looks even and the bevel looks straight. The scale is an easy thing to replace. I make new scales all the time. Made a set this weekend and drilled the front pinning hole just a tad crooked so I'm going to have to rebuild those. It only takes me about an hour from start to finish with a bandsaw and a sander.

Yeah, I really enjoy making scales too and I'll definitely put new scales on it. I think I'll keep the old homemade ones in case they fit better with a different blade later on. I was just going to toss them out but the more I look at them I kind of like them for what they are. They have the feel of years on them and somebody before me took the time to make them.

That is a fine idea. Maintains the character and care that has been put into the razor.

Pretty old! I have seen Shaw and Sons, but not just John Shaw!

Judging from your latest work, it shall be a beauty as you restore it!
    Great find!

With a little TLC, you will have a really nice razor. I just recently picked up a pair of old W&B wedges that were in far worse shape, but cleaned up beautifully. Nice acquisition and good luck on the restoration!

The homemade straight scales look very strange with the large smiling blade so I agree they should go. It's nice that you're keeping them for something else though. They have a certain character and patina that is beautiful in its own unique way. I like the collars for that reason too.
