Default W. Greaves & sons Stubtail razor

Picked this up on the bay from an antique dealer in Lancaster PA. An early W. Greaves & Sons pre 1823 with probable original dark horn scales with decorative pewter end cap. Sold with its "original" coffin? Could be. Only a few bidders and I was fortunate to get it. There is another thread here on SRP about a similar/exact example obviously the scales were done by the same hand. http://straightrazorpalace.com/works...storation.html Doubt I'll do much to this old beauty other than put a good shaving edge on it. Not sure if this has been reground? Love those Greaves!!! Appreciate comments and further discussion. Thanks, AustinName: FullSizeRender (1).jpg

Awesome find. I also have one similar to yours that I restored several months ago. The link is this http://straightrazorpalace.com/custo...storation.html if you are interested in having a look there (but not intending to derail this thread). I also have a couple Packwoods that look very similar with that same silver end cap on the scales. Maybe I'll try to add those here for the sake of comparing. Enjoy, it's a nice one!

That is an amazing restore you did. New scales and two tones on the blade. I was not planning on doing that extent on a restore but may reconsider. Great job!!!!!! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks! Not to go too far off topic but check out the scales on these Packwoods just like the ones on the Greaves.
The scales on this one are intact:

The back scale on this one is unfortunately cracked by the pewter cap:

It seems that scale making was sometimes done in a cottage industry in those days.
Would not be surprised to learn that they all came from the same source? Nice stuff!

Indeed, it seems the period between the 1820's and to the 40's saw LOTS of changes in these things.
The industrial revolution started early there!

I'm glad you got it Austin. I was watching it but missed it & I see it went for less than I anticipated.
