    Default Very Large Razors

I've now gathered a few of these. It started with a razor that had been ground short but seemed large in general. Then I picked up a trio that looked normal in the auction pictures, but turned out to be much larger (this was a set of razors from George Palmer in London, early 1800s). Finally I got a razor in really poor shape that needed lots of TLC, the Ellis & Allen. Here they are all together, with a 17/16 Wade & Butcher FBU for a sense of scale. I'm not sure why these razors were made to the size that they were.

I am curious how they handle. Are they awkward to use or is the extra size not that noticeable?

I once had a custom made by Josh Earl in which the cutting edge was 3/8 - 1/2" longer than usual. I had to really pay attention to avoid nicking my ear when running down on my sideburn. I imagine those would be the similar.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

They're not too difficult to handle. Like an old employer who was instructing me on how to drive some of the large trucks said, "Just remember, it's big".

    Marketing perhaps?

A good straight razor will last for years. Those will last for centuries.
