Thread: My new setup

This is my current setup that just became complete today!

Razor: AOS TI black plastic scales first razor
Strop: Red Imp 700c that my Dad gave me Today that was used by my great grandfather!
I would love opinions on its condition
Brush: Ever Ready Pure Badger 500pbt
Backup razor: grandfathers Gillette slim DE adjustable with VDH blades
Shave oil: Badger brand preshave oil
Shave soap: VDH cheap but I like it ok
Shave cream: AOS sandalwood tub
Aftershave : Witch hazel followed by a friends homemade organic salve
Lather Bowl: Bamboo bowl and large mug from Ikea currently.

At some point I will get my great grandfathers brush and mug but have no clue what brand or model.

I plan on practicing my stroping before using the Red Imp, hopefully it is in usable condition.

Just looked up the Date code for the Gillette and it is a H3

Considering its age, your great grandfather's strop looks to be in great condition. It may just need some conditioner to bring it back up to snuff.

Those Red Imp strops are highly regarded.

Very nice set up. Being it was your great grandfather's makes it special. I wish I had something from my father or grandfather's shaving equipment. Good luck.

So I think you should do yourself a favour. Put some nests foot oil on that strop and put it away. Almost everyone here has killed their first strop. Buy a decent strop with a replaceable leather and once you have gotten stropping down pat the. Use your heirloom strop.
I do not know if your razor has been honed and is shave ready, but that is very important.
It all looks very serviceable and you should be able to get some good shaves. I love Noxema as a preshave cream. Welcome to. The rabbit hole!

its an Art of Shaving razor,, unless hes sent it to someone it will need some work on the edge,, they really don't know much about razors at that place,, good luck and yes id put that strop away and get me a decent one to save maybe an oops moment in the beginning. Tc

They don't know much period in there, aside from oh this is lemon scent and this is Sandalwood.
Both your strop and your Gillette look to be in great shape, the strop could use a good cleaning both linen and leather and as stated put up for a bit until you have stropping figured out Your DE will clean up very well for you

that De will give as good a shave as you can ask for ,, I never had a slim, but my Fatboy is still delivering great shaves after 40+ years of using one Tc

I have decided not to allow myself to use a new premium quality strop until I can go a full year without nicking any of the ones I have now. I'm finding I have to concentrate twice as much on stropping to avoid nicks than I do with shaving. Besides, nicks to the face heal whereas nicks to a strop do not.

It's the continued learning process with this sport that helps make it so rewarding and enjoyable.
