I am making them, Mike. Thanks for asking. Well, at least I'm making them unless I go super-exotic and can't fabricate them myself.
I was thinking something from the islands, of course. Perhaps volcanic, perhaps exotic Hawaiian wood. There are a lot of arts and crafts shows in Waikiki that sell small blocks of wood for carving, or volcanic glass type material, but that takes a real special skill. Yet we have craftsman that can work with volcanic rock/glass here.
Of course, Bamboo and similar is always available. But my first thought to be honest was Hawaiian Koa Wood for one of the scales;
Hard, attractive and unique.
