    Default John Petty & Sons

Found this little feller today locally. What the hey the price was right and it gave me something to do. Gave it a quick lick and a polish. Took a bit to slowly work some chips out towards the toe. Did not want to go too heavy on the bevel setter because she's a small blade to begin with. Almost done, just have to put her on the finisher, strop and test shave. If all goes well I'll likely eventually unpin her and give the scales a drink of Neetsfoot oil and a light sanding/polish.

    Aloha!

Very nice find. Looks like it cleaned up nicely for a quick polish. I really like the barrel trademark. I'm debating on polishing the patina off of my Wade & Butcher FBU and a few others. I go through stages where I like a shiny blade, and then I want the patina of the ages back and regret the polishing.

    Enjoy!

The good news is that it easily passed the 4 pass shave test. Sure wish all my edges came out like that one first crack. The little blade that really could, how bout that.

Got round to a little research. According to Taylors1000.com John Petty & Sons where located at the Perth Works, Garden Street, Sheffield ca. 1858-1953.

Nice razor from my home city
Petty's were at the top of Garden St, Sheffield. They owned the premises until more recent times selling the site to a developer who demolished the old workshops. This area of Sheffield is seeing some development for student accommodation for the university.
The area in it's heyday was full of cutlery and razor makers, within a quarter to half a mile there was a dozen or more firms, a short walk would take you around these.
If you take a look on Google street view you can make a virtual tour of the side streets, much changed in places but you get a feel for the area.

    Tom

Thanks for posting the link. So, I can take it that mine is pre 1888 and post 1858.
