Thread: Yesterday was a good day!

So I went for the gold(my gold) on the bay last week. Since getting into this hobby I've gone nuts. Well I think I can finally apply the breaks a bit. I've had this image in my head for as long as I can remember, of an old time barber setup. I hit pay dirt and got exactly what I wanted.

The razor is in good shape. The blade honestly seemed never used. There is no hone wear and the bevel looked like something from a factory. It had a bit of rust(dragon spit [emoji26]) when I got it. Took some 2000 w/d paper to it. Did a quick hone to see how the blade felt on stone,nice. The big unfortunate is it seems one of the scales warped/expanded? Now the blade doesn't sit center. Box is in good shape.

The strop is just amazing in my opinion. It had some dry soap on it. I just rubbed it in with my fingers. No nicks,cuts or scratches to speak of. The feel is exactly what I had in my head(smooth soft buttery clean). The second component is leather and honesty feels rough as hell. Any advice?

The coticule has a few issues. But I don't see them effecting functionality. I lapped it and she came out beautiful. It's hard, I'd say medium speed, definitely the finest coti I have.

Nice haul. The scales can be straightened. There are a few threads on the subject. If it is your first project, you can wait or send it to someone. The basic pretence is to heat the scales then hold them flat until they cool. It requires unpinning and repinning the razor, most of the time. Look on the underside at the warp and decide from there how bad you think it is. You can sometimes get a blade to centre on non warped scales by repinning it. Sometimes a bent hinge pin is what takes it off centre.

Benson, nice haul there. IIRC outback fixed warped scales while the razor was together with a heat gun and popsicle sticks. May wait to see if he chimes in. Taking the razor apart might be the best bet depending on how bad the warp is though. Beauty of a coti.

Taking them apart would be best way for getting them straight again.

As for the strop...clean with saddle soap and let dry.
Then apply a small amount of pure neats foot oil to a damp rag, and rub in to the leather, hang and let dry.
It will take several applications this way, over a long period of time. iT CANNOT BE RUSHED

It took a long time to dry out, so its gonna take time to rehydrate it.

Yea, warped scales can be straightened after a fashion using heat and Popsicle sticks without unpinning the razor. IIRC I used the bosses hair dryer and was careful not to get the scales too hot incase the old celluloid scales caught fire.

It seem that it would be similar to bending plastic conduit. I'm an electrician by trade, so have a bit of experience/knowledge. I've learned my lessons on to much to little heat. It is definitely a fine line. I'll find the threads.

The strop is not dry. The opposite in fact. It's very close to Gasman's fancy strop I saw and felt at the meet. Whoever owned it knew what they were doing and I'm very thankful for that!
