Thread: New Guy with a Razor Story

Hello wet shavers,

I have a little story to tell about my new razor. Take a load off and enjoy the read.

Lucky me as I browsed these forums filled with the timeless knowledge of wet shaving throughout the ages, I come across a beauty of a razor, only used twice, and up for sale. After a message to the seller I find it is still available. With a smile on my face I make my purchase and immediately go outside and start camping next to the mail box [emoji39]. After a day goes by I get a visit from a man dressed in blue. After explaining to the officer I am not homeless and actually live in the house just up the walkway, I continue my camp waiting for the precious steel that will soon arrive.

In my excited state I realize I did not ask the seller if it will be shave ready when it arrives, so I quickly send a message to confirm I can cut the whiskers off my face as soon as the mailman hands me the package. The reply comes shortly after, "No it will not need honing, It is shave ready and should be for a long time." My hope is now even higher based on this reassurance.... Shave Ready.

Finally after a couple of days the package arrives. As I hold the package in my hand I feel the heft. This package must just have a steel bar in it, or maybe the seller sent me a hone by mistake? The package is far too heavy to simply have straight edge razor in it. Without any more hesitation I begin to rip the package opened. Inside I find a carefully bubble wrapped cylindrical shape, once the wrap is removed, a device that must have been forged by demons is revealed. Thinking to myself I knew this was going to be a big razor, but my lord I did not know it was going to spit hell fire and need a seethe to be worn on my belt.

Being new to straight razor shaving I feared damaging the new blade and set it aside (at least that is what I told myself, I was more afraid of the blade taking a body part off that I am rather fond of.).

Fast Forward to today ....

On this glorious morning I decided to go ahead and pull the blade from its sleeve and give it a try. After kissing my wife and making sure my life insurance was up to date (double checking the dismemberment policy) I began my shave.

Putting the oil, cream, and prep was not going to protect me from this reaper, yet I prepped as I have learned and practiced. Placing the blade on my face I began my first stroke, I did not feel a thing except for a glide down my sideburn. Setting the steel down on the counter I inspected its work. To my surprise the result was near flawless and way beyond my high expectations. It seemed that the fearsome tool of whisker destruction had lived up to the promise the seller had given me "Shave Ready". As I continued the shave this ghostly blade seems to effortlessly glide across my face removing all comers in its path. It is as if I was only guiding it, yet the blade had already picked its path. I am very lucky to own this fine instrument.

Thank you all for your advice and help over the last month. Today I finally achieved that silky smooth shave with a straight razor, you know that shave that you can't help but check every now and then because you can't believe there is no burn because it is so close.

Looks like a Koraat razor

Yes it is a Koraat that I picked up from B/S/T.

Oh that was aI fun read...I remember...few people ar lucky to have such a fine first straight shave...glad to see it worked out!

This thing is still kicking butt. Third day in a row using it and I can not wait to make it a fourth.

In a preemptive method to keep this edge, I asked Ulrik what to do to keep the edge as it is. He gave me some good advice, I do not have everything he advised, but hopefully I will obtain it before I need it.

One thing, does anyone know or can point me in the right direction of how to find / make 120k diamond on leather? Can I just paste an extra leather strop with .25 micron diamond paste? Or do I need to find a finer paste?
