Thread: F. Herder - "The Spade"

After seeing Tom's posts, this showed up in my mailbox yesterday.

It's in absolutely perfect shape but just as he said, it needs a wedge and spacers between the blade and the scales.
It will go on the to do list. I looked everywhere and have no suitable material for making a wedge right now.

Tom, as I have said before, you are an Enabler!

You can get that thing apart and taper the bone spacer that it has, Pete. Put some spacers in....Home-run!

You will find that it is glued together at the bottom. Some prayer and a twist of a screwdriver will get them apart!

Taper the spacer into a wedge and put spacers in??
I've heard that mentioned before in other thread. What do you mean by spacers?

Spacers that are mensioed are the large washers that go between blade and scales in the pivot area. This keep the tang from wearing a ridge in the scales.

Yes! And the spacer at the wedge end is not wedge-shaped. Therefore a different kind of 'spacer'.....As it were!

What kind of wedge material do you need/want? I have a variety of different stuff that I would be glad to send you.

I did find a few things suitable for making a wedge.
I have micarta, ebony and lead that would work for this.
First I'm going to try Tom's suggestion and try to reshape the spacer that's there already.
If all else fails, I'll let you know.

Pete, I know you have some nice grinders and such. I used a redneck way to taper them.
As I popped the scales apart, I left the 'spacer' on the scale it was still stuck to and clamped a big file to the workbench and used that to taper it to a wedge as-necessary using the scale as a handle with my thumb on the wedge end. The first few on a disc sander went pretty well, but then I totally screwed one up.

The file worked great, but had to be cleaned often.
