My lonely Genco got a friend
Surfing through e-bay I came across a Geneva with cream and blue swirly scales that caught my eye (I don't know why, but I kinda like those funky type scales. My Genco has orange and black swirls). Put it on my watch list and noticed no one had bid with about 14 hours to go. It was at $9.99 and $4.00 shipping, couldn't resist. It ended at an awkward work time, so I put a low max bid on it. Checked it at lunch, and no one else had bid
. It's in pretty good condition with a bit of heavier rust at the spine and not much everywhere else. The pins are tight and it closes right in the center. I think I'll just clean this up as is. Hopefully this will shave as well as my Genco (no reason it shouldn't).

That rust spot in the middle of the edge may give you a little work out on the stones. It might come off easy too. Just watch it close. It may open up a bigger spot of rust. And the stabilizer won't take much honing before you need to cut it back some. But I think you did this before. I would have gone for it too at the right price. I picked up a razor the other day for less than 12 bucks shipped. Turned out it needed a little work but not a lot. You're a Winner as far as I'm concerned.
It's just Sharpening, right?

The rust spot in the middle is mostly under the edge of the spine. The rust on the spine is really thin. But you're right, you never know till you take a layer off. I've re-shaped one heel and it went pretty well, may be I'll just get this one up front and not have to worry about the future. I think this will be an "in between" project I'll work on when it's to hot for the garage or I need a break from a more extensive project.

Thanked: 4828That’s a pretty sweet deal. They are a very good brand.
It's not what you know, it's who you take fishing!

I was talking about the tiny spot right on the cutting edge. But it might come out or even wipe of as some kinda smoots.

That's a great price. You should be well rewarded once you have it cleaned and honed.

If you haven't tried it yet, use a SE razor blade and cut the rust off. You may find u don't need the steel wool, or sand paper.

Thanked: 3215Geneva is Genco, Geneva Cutlery Company was shortened to Genco. They were the largest razor manufacture in the early 1900’s and claimed at one time to produce over, 6,000 razors per week. They were sold to Case in the late 30’s
Genco, Geneva’s are great shavers. Do watch those scales they are prone to Cell rot. The rust will form in the pattern of the scales. Any of those patterned scales, translucent, faux tortoise and cracked ice you really must be on the look out for signs of cell rot.
As said cut it off with a single edge razor and see if it has eaten the edge. Genco’s are some of my favorite shavers.

Gasman: The spot on the edge came off with the razor scrape. The edge is free of rust. Some other issues I'll be putting up in the workshop. Either start a new thread or in What are you working on. Probably the latter.
Outback: Yeah, the razor scrape works really well as a first step. Been my "go to" move the last couple of razors. I've been following with steel wool and some polish to see where I'm at. Then decide how far I want to go with the sanding/finishing. Would have never even thought of the razor scrape without this site - you guys have so many tips worked out. Feel like I need to constantly thank you guys.
Euclid440: I knew one came from the other, but can never remember which was first. Thanks for that, now I know my Geneva's the older sibling to my Genco. I love the way my Genco shaves, took a while to get the hone right (super hard steel), but all it needs now is a little stropping and good to go. Hoping this one is the same.. I'll watch for the rot.Last edited by JellyJar; 04-24-2019 at 02:11 AM.
