7/8 Geo. Wostenholm & Sons Celebrated I*XL Rzr w/ Barbers Notch & Initials on Scales
This is one of the smaller razors from the lot that I won recently. You can find the original thread here.
Best efforts to describe it:
7/8 George Wostenholm & Sons Celebrated I * XL Wedge Razor w/ Barbers Notch & fancy scales with initials carved on the back side. Since the stamp reads "& Sons" and the place of manufacture is Washington Works, Sheffield the earliest that this razor could have been made is around 1847.
Overall the razor is in great condition. A little hone wear. No signs of active rust. Great for its age albeit some scuff marks from honing (probably).
The 1840's small pivot pin is not tight. The wedge pin is also not tight. There is some back and forth play when opening and closing the razor and the wedge spins freely inside the scales. The ornate scales appear to be original. The wording matches the stamp on the tang, referring to the I*XL messaging. The black scale material feels like plastic but I can't verify. The pattern design is very intricate though. On the backside of the scales are the initials M.R.S.
The full wedge, notched blade is sharp. The stamp on the tang is crisp and legible but not too deep. I believe that this design is called shoulderless.
Thanks for looking.
