Great new lot
I just got this lot in today. I was so excited to get this one in. I usually buy ones that need more work that I can work on and improve more but these just really caught my fancy.
This one is my first frameback. It's a John Engstrom
Notice the etching on the blade. Do you think that 1874 is a production date? It seems consistent.
This MJ Higgins I think may actually be real tortoise shell.
As I mentioned before I lost my sense of smell and even though it has come back some I don't trust it enough to try to do the pin test myself. I got home late to find it had arrived so I'll wait until tomorrow and have a family member do the sniff test for me.
Dubl Duck No 1 in very good condition
Darn sideways pics.... Anyway hardly any discernible hone wear but it looks like the scales may have been changed once before or possibly just reworked. They seem to be horn from what I can tell. Again, I'll know more tomorrow.
And last but by no means least a Wosthenholm Celebrated IXL Washington Works pre '91... Also horn. Probably Buffalo.
I feel like I'm too old to be this excited about new toys but... It's just like Christmas morning.Iron by iron is sharpened, And a man sharpens the face of his friend. PR 27:17

Nice bunch of razors! I have a frame back just like that and it's a great shaver. Here's a thread on tortoise and how to identify it. Maybe it will help. Sometimes the fakes can be made of horn and in that case the pin test will be a false positive.

Thanked: 4826I’m not sure the DD Special one has non original scales. I have seen quite a few with those scales. There were some that had similar with the DD inlay, and I don’t think any of the Specials had the fancy cracked ice and bolster scales. It looks like they mostly just need a good cleaning and honing. The Wolstenholme looks like it needs a little more than just cleaning. It is a good looking bunch.

Thank you. I am very happy with this batch. On the Dubl Duck, I think it may have been apart and cleaned or something because the pivot pin is rather loose and has a pronounced burr on the peening. Plus there are some scratches (looks like from a file) on the scale on one side. I think I may just try to tighten that pin and smooth over the peening and not even take this one apart since it is pretty clean already. I polished it up some with four aught and 3M polish for about 5 minutes and it cleaned up quite nicely already. I may just run a light buffing on the wheel and hone this one after tightening the pins and call it a day.

Thanked: 3215Nice buy. Love the blade on the Higgins. Scales look like dyed horn, should clean up nicely.
The Duck is in good shape and make a super shaver, scales look like Duck Celluloid, probably been unpinned, but likely original scales.
The Wosthenholm would look killer with a smile to match the spine and be a shaver. Scales should clean up, if the pivot is not too bad on the back.
Four nice razors, that will not need too much work to get them shaving.
