Thread: SHAPTON GDLP.......I like it a lot!

Out of all the acquisition disorders out there, I currently have HAD.

As such, I sprung for the Shapton Glass Diamond Lapping Plate (GDLP). It took a few weeks to get here but it's here and I'm happy.

I want to write a full fledged review in the review area after I lap a few more stones on it. So far I've just lapped Shapton 2000 & 16000 grit ceramic on glass plates and my new tiger striped yellow coticle

I love this lapper.

I don't want to start a DMT vs. Shapton argument or a .001 flat vs. .5 micron flat argument. I sold my DMT D8C and went to this one and I like how this laps better; with the recessed areas, there is less stiction. Even with the recessed areas it's so flat across the surface, I can lift a stone I'm lapping and the suctioned GDLP off the bottom of the sink for about 3-4 seconds before they come loose. I don't know how I'd get a stone and this GDLP apart if it didn't have the recessed valleys.

Looks absolutely wonderful! After seeing the sweet lapping porn I think I'm finally going to have to get some pictures of my plate in this show and tell section. Off to find the camera!!!

What is the size on this thing?, 8"x3" or is it bigger?
Maybe I'm crazy, but it would be nice to have a lappingplate that is bigger than the hones you want to lap..

It's sized to fit the Shapton Ceramic on Glass stones. It's 2 3/4" wide by about 9 1/2" long. Lapping a 3" wide stone like a Norton would simply require a circular motion, some diagonals, etc; mixing it up a bit. For the Shapton ceramics since this lapping plate fits the width perfectly, Shapton suggests a back and forth lapping motion (the lapping plate is at least an inch longer than the ceramic plates) finishing off with a few diagonals for good measure.

I have an 8" x 3" Yellow Coticule/Belgian Blue natural combo and an 8"x3" full Belgian Blue that I'll be lapping this weekend.

No problem on this with a larger stone.

Well, I think I'll stick to my D8C as lappingplate for now, can't see what this will give, since it is same grit and things.. maybe it is überflat but..

But for looks.. It looks cool, they gotta have that!

I have used mine on almost all my hones and use it every day on my Norton 4K/8K. I really like it too.
