Can't help thinking the seller would do much better selling individually - it is time and effort though. Must be at least ten of the twenty would sell for $15 - $30, some more I am sure, on the Bay. The small display box too. Could be a good catch for somebody looking for some restoration work. That chip near the heel on the wonderedge is a pity. If it didn't have that some folk would pay more than $200 for it alone. Mind you it is repairable I am sure.

Going in on these with a friend, if we win we are going to do the old school yard pick for the razors.

I don't mean to burst your bubble, but did you look at the other pics? Specifically, the eighth one?

To keep others from developing a queasy stomach and emptying the contents of their stomach onto their keyboards, I'll only post the URL:

Man, I get queasy thinking about that pic. And it was such a nice looking Dovo.

That "rust" follows the scale line - meaning that without close examination, I'm betting that it's cell rot. Just search SRP for cell rot. I'll just say that it's not good news by any means...

Gah! That sick sick sick Dovo....

Hey Byron, I tryed doing a search for cell rot and after going through 10 or so random post I cant seem to find anything good on it.. Can you link one for me? And what about the other? If thats the only bad one (or unsalvagable one), 19 fairly good ones still seems good to me, but I'm still real new to this, havent even had my first shave yet, so I dont know. Anyway, thanks for the help. Patrick

To sum it up, it's the celluloid scales off-gassing, what they off-gas is corrosive to razors and the resulting corrosion looks a lot like rust - but more orange than the dark brown to black stuff you're used to seeing in old razors. It also might be more damaging to the blades as well, as in you remove the corrosion and you have to remove more material than you would if it was just rust and pitting.

Further, there is something about the celluloid rot that seems to be contagious - meaning that razors scales stored in close proximity may start to develop the same off-gassing.

So the longer that Dovo - if it's cell rot - stays in that drawer with the other razors, you've got an unknown risk that their scales are affected as well. It makes the whole set much more of a crap shoot.

Just to give an idea of how that one picture changes the auction? I would have thought someone (a collector/restorer) would snipe at least $1250 on them. Now? I doubt that person even takes the chance... (and anything over $250 is really a risk, IMO).

I agree, that Dovo is toast. and I also agree, although the chip in the WE is honable, for razor with such collectability, it makes the chip more significant. Also, some of those razors had major frowns which I wouldn't even bother with restoring. All in all, personally I think there are a few nice razors (I like the Bartmann) but I don't look at this small collection as being overly valuable. I'm going to watch the item though to see how much it ends up selling for.

    Default Winning Bid

The winning bid is listed as $550. Maybe the case was worth $200.
