Birthday Spoils: Scuttle and Red Imp 132
Both my brother and my girlfriend offered to get me shaving related gifts for my birthday. My gf inquired as to what I wanted, and I asked for a scuttle. My brother saw my AIM away message and won a Red Imp 132 on Ebay. Both happened to arrive today.
The scuttle is beautiful, and far larger than I expected, which is a good thing.
The Red Imp has some staining, but no pitting, and pops hairs off my arm with ease. It wasn't advetised as such, but I think it just might be shave ready.
Here are some shots of both. I know the razor doesn't look great in these shots, but I used it to give an idea of the size of the scuttle.

It is a Georgetown. Having now used it once, I have some thoughts on it.
The scuttle is great, and I love it. Two comments that I would make are as follows. The scuttle is heavy, esp when it has water in it. Also, I'm used to a wide mug, and the scuttle is rather deep and gets narrow at the bottom; this means smaller circles when building lather and the lather will be high. Be prepared to get lather on your hands if you have a short brush.

I've been following the Georgetown Scuttle since one of the guys had his made. It has developed because of the interest of the owner and the input of SRP'rs and others. The scuttle has gone through 3 versions so far...
I thought that this version raised the bottom up ~1/2 inch. It did not raise in this version. the mouth changed.
I spoke with the folk at Georgetown Pottery yesterday cause I wanted to order one. When he told me the lather bowl was NOT raised I chatted with him about the need to raise the bottom. Which would then be my only complaint. The scuttles till now have all been handthrown and he can't raise the bottom till he makes a mold.
We talked about the concentric circles that come up on the sides being replaced with lines starting from the center bottom and radiating up the walls a wee bit. I thought that would be the bee's knees.
When it is molded the Georgetown Pottery Scuttle will have the bottom raised ~ 1/2 inch which will enable a hot water jacket to completely cover the lather bowl. The lather will stay warmer longer.
THe lines (Picture a line the thickness of a Bic pen ink container) will enhance the lathering of the soap/cream. I love the concentric lines and have no trounle making lather. This was The owners idea for ease of mold making. I told him the lines will work as well or better that the circles.
I like the weight because I can lather one handed. I don't have to hold the scuttle in hand and make lather with the other hand.
I think the molded version will be the perfect scuttle. The mold should be ready in ~ 1 month.
Do I need to say that I have no association with Georgetown other than following and giving my thoughts on the development of the scuttle to make it perfect for me????Last edited by TOB9595; 04-05-2008 at 02:46 PM. Reason: disclaimer

I was also planning on buying another once they get a mold as I spoke to him about this on the phone a little as well and he did mention that currently there is no water jacket at the very bottom because of not having a mold yet - just on the sides of the scuttles for now. Still enjoying the one I have though

Wow, I had no idea they were that big. (you get that all the time right... Looks like they will accommodate any size brush. Thanks for the size comparison. I have one that should arrive this week. I cant wait. I was also not aware that there was not complete water coverage around the lather bowl. I wish I would have waited now, but I don't think I'll be disapointed. I have not heard anyone complain that their lather is going cold during the shave...

Yup, stays quite warm, and you can always refresh the water. Also, the scuttle is quite heavy, so I don't mind not having the extra water weight.
