Thread: Kintaka Strop

Bought this from Telly.

Really fabulous piece of supple leather. And the canvas is a very nice weave. A bit softer than the new TM canvas, and the Kintaka has the white paste applied to it.

The tail is a straight cut "barber's style" so you must grip it directly. I generally prefer handles, but in the case of this strop it actually is quite a bonus, as you get to handle and feel the fantastically soft leather against your hand as you grip it.

Draw? There is no draw on this strop. It is a super smooth piece of fine horsehide leather, and the razor just shoots up on down it like a speedskater, no resistance whatsoever. The finish is actually pretty glossy.

The canvas, as I said, is quite nice. Very stylish little leather tab on the end of the canvas for gripping and looking good. My TM is not pasted, this one came from the factory with the white paste applied (it also had a paper wrapper around it with instructions on proper stropping techniques). This canvas gives a bit different feel than the TM. Perhaps it is the weave, or perhaps it is the white paste? I don't know, but it felt good zipping the razor up and down there!

I'm used to the feel of the latigo draw, so it will take me some time to adjust to the new strop. I'm looking forward to it! Now I get to justify to myself even more stropping--first a little canvas...then some latigo...then the coup de grace' the Kintaka horsehide!

My wife will be banging on the door cause I'll be in there way too long!

Great review. I tried mine this morning and had the same experience.
I usually don't strop between passes, but the Kinkata just felt so smooth I kept going back to it.

The leather looks a lot like the stuff on the, err cant recall the name now, the ones martin at raspur sells. They are also shell cardovan from japan so I reckon it wouldn't be much of a stretch to think it is. If it is the case I really love the feel of the leather as well.
Also I prefer the grip on leather style because of the looks of said strops compared to handle ones.

Edit: I just wanted to add that I think it was really nice of him to sell them at that price, as I understood it they would be close to the ones from raspur in price if he had not gotten in some sort of bargin. Five finger discount probably

Yeah, they look to be very similar.

Probably not a "five finger discount", but rather shady connections with the Yakuza straight razor underworld of Tokyo...This strop is probably Yakuza certified for getting their razor really sharp before cutting off their fingers...

Telly certainly is a gentleman for selling them at that price. They could easily have gone for much more. I tip my hat to you, Telly!


Mine won't be up for re-sale, however, as it really is a very unique/cool strop.

It's good to know everyone likes their strop. I'll keep an eye out for any more.

Yes, THANK YOU TELLY!!! They really are quite nice - soft, supple leather and a finely woven canvas (which I didn't notice was pasted). What are the odds that two of them made it to Boston!?!
