    Default My Razor Box(es)

For my birthday almost a year ago, my wife surprised me by having a 7-day box made for my razors, which had, till then, been living in cigar boxes. I think it also had to do with her having the bathroom counter redone, and this was probably her way of telling me that my cigar box had become an eyesore. Be that as it may, it was still a very sweet gesture on her part.

A few of the folks had been asking for details and photos, but I had never really gotten around to it. I was laid up sick this past week, and so here it is.

She had asked a friend of hers who is into woodworking to make this, and he showed up with the box on the left. It was actually just a prototype, which he preferred instead of making an elaborate drawing. It was actually pretty cool that the "scraps" he used were, unknown to him, types of wood we commonly use for scales. I don't remember too well if the frame was cherry or rosewood, but the dark center of the lid is wenge. The bottom of the box is macassar ebony.

The prototype is beautiful, but it was only for 6 razors!! It was also a bit wide, as you can see with the (oily-bladed) duck for scale. Works nicely for large choppers, though. He told me to keep the prototype, with no charge, and went to work on the "real" box.

He came back a few weeks later with the box pictured on the right. Same wood choices, a bit more polished. He had run out of wenge, and had substituted some yellowheart he had on hand! Mind you, this guy knows nothing about straights. I swear he must be telepathic.

This time, the width was just right. I had also asked that he make deeper cuts in the dividers for ease of picking up the razors.

I now keep one box on the bathroom counter for the week, and switch them around. Fortunately, that part of the bathroom does not get humid, but I still toss in some small capsules of silica with the razors.

The guy's truly a craftsman. I have since had him make me this 28mm silvertip brush with a large, heavy handle of cocobolo.

Beautiful! That razor in the last picture, are those scales wenge? What are they finished in? Working on some just like em now and haven't decided how to finish em yet.

    Feel better!

    Thanks.

Those are just the stock scales of the Wester Bros. De-Fi. I am not sure of the material, probably acrylic, but not wood.
