Thread: Charnwood forest

I just snagged a couple of what I believe to be Charnwood Forest stones, cant wait to have a play, fingers crossed they are in good condition, its hard to tell much from the sellers pics. I want them in my sweaty hands now

How do they rate compared to the Charnley Forest stones?
The veining in the top one suggests it may well be. Too hard to tell from the photo what the bottom stone is. Very nice though.

Im not sure which is correct to be honest, I see references to Charnley forest hones but as a geographical location there are more references to Charnwood, for example

Charnwood

I'll have to do a bit more research to find out which is correct

The seller tells me that the bottom stone has red markings to its underside and they are both from the same person so I suspect they are both Charnwood/ley, both naturals anyway. Not that I needed two but how could I resist?

Thanks for those links. I have to agree. When talking about the location it seem's to be referred to as Charnwood, but the stones are commonly called Charnley. That's a bit odd.
Either way, i'm glad you took it with good humour, as it was meant.

I really havent a clue myself but Ive googled them so much that I have Charnleywood coming out of my ears! I was in Leicester last week as well but no opportunity to explore. Im certainly not offended anyway Could be the name was changed?

Spent several hours with some fine sand and a slab flattening welsh slate from a hone quarry yesterday, I'll have to post a pic in the welsh hone thread if I can find it.

That is really cool Jason. You are pro actively one with your HAD. It seems you have a hybrid form of HAD not known before ........ you've got WelshHAD.... only known to be found in the British Isles.

Howard has a pretty example of the Charnley Forest stone in his hone museum here. hi_bud_gl A.K.A. Sham or Sam also has some and I have one. Sam's are very pretty stones like Howard's.

I have fooled around with mine and it is a slow cutter. Too slow for my liking so far. I need to mess with it some more and try it with slurry and with a variety of razors and perhaps (shudder) pocket knives.

I am really glad that you found those. They look very like mine right down to the base and top. I got mine from a tool collecting place in the UK thanks to forum member littlesilverbladefromwales, A.K.A. Marcus. Here is mine.

My internet connection has been down for a few days and still is but I've jumped on somebody elses PC for a minute or two!

The stones arrived today, I'll post pics when I have a connection again, I think they are both probably Charnley stones, both similarly hard and a pain to lap, similar greenish base colour and theres a subtle red tint to part of the 2nd stone, its also quite reminiscent of yours Jimmy, thanks for sharing that picture. My HAD isnt confined by national boundaries, just by the depth of my pocket and whether or not SWMBO is keeping count

Blade, sorry about snatching them from under your nose, I may stick one of them back on the bay anyway, it would just be greedy to keep two with similar properties and I dont even have a coticule or a Belgian Blue yet!
