    Default Scored! Barbers kit?

I had gone to the estate sale Saturday but wasn't too impressed. It was all extreamly dirty and $45 seemed like too much to spend, especially since I was near broke. I had planned on going back the next day but woke up late and had to hit the ATM. Much to my surprise they were still available about 1/2 hour after they opened and at 1/2 price, lucky me.

The two Anchor Manganese w/bone and the Union are lightly pitted but restorable. The 6/8 Griffon cleaned up easy and is sweet. The coticule side combo is shot but the BBW side is usable as is the 3 line Swaty. While it hadn't occured to me at first, I assume this may have been a barbers kit. I'm tempted to fabricate a tray and make provision to hang a brush.

Nice score. Are you saying that based on the thinness of the coticule side of that stone that if you lapped that side flat there would be areas of the coticule that would actually be gone? It's hard to tell from the picture.

If not, even if the coticule layer after lapping was extremely thin, I would lap it and use it; most likely it would be a serviceable stone for you.

Thanks for the congratulations and yes, thinking too much has cost me dearly over the years.
The coticule is actually a natural combination bonded to a BBW. Rather than lapping away the coticule, I will use whats left on my cutlery. When I do lap it, I will be left with a purple backing and the more blue/gray portion of the natural combination. I'll have a bonded combination of two grades of BBW.

If you have another coticule, you can use that worn one as the slurry stone. That's what I do with one severely dished coticule. I didn't have the heart to lap away about a quarter inch of coticule on each end so I'm just gradually wearing it away by using the ends for producing slurry.

You got a heck of a bargain there. The 3 line Swaty alone is worth what you paid so all the rest is bonus. Even the strop looks good.

Wow, nice score. For $23, that's definitely worth it. Like Utopian said, that Swaty alone is worth that. Good job!

Lap that side and use it as a multi-grade hone, it might have magical properties.

That is a great idea. However before I read your post I flatted it and washed that nice coticule juice down the sink. It does look a bit magical though.

If this is flat, it may actually still work well as a coticule for touch ups, or even rising light slurry shouldn't wear it down. Only one way to find out.

    good score
