Pretty as a picture
... or is it a picture only

The showing and telling will probably continue a bit later, but I just received this razors from OLD_SCHOOL, and I had already gotten the hone from him quite some time ago.
Thought they make a really nice pair together.
The black band on the razor is not a shadow, it's how it's finished.
The rattan is OLD_SCHOOL's job, makes it look so much better than the original thing that was wrapped around the handle. Really like the red thing he put underneath, and he also blued the handle so that it's more rust resistant.Last edited by gugi; 04-29-2009 at 08:44 PM.

That picture is worth framing, Ivan. Very nice. It soothes me.

The razor is nice indeed, but that's a very pretty hone too! I'd love to see more pics of it.

OK, here's the continuation of the showing and telling....
As you've noticed the bottom of the hone is hand chiseled for a rather unusual look. On these additional pictures you can also see the top of the hone. There's a bit of swarf on it too, but it's a fast hone and I don't care to lap it. I should probably do it one of these days and take some pretty pictures of it. But I think the colors speak for it - it's quite uncommon and it's just booou-tee-foool, to paraphrase Lynn. (And yeah, this is the very manly pink next to the light cream, in case you were wondering.)
As far as the razor goes, it's a vintage one and I should probably ask OLD_SCHOOL again for the translation of the recognizable kanji (I don't really care much though).
I do like the rustic look of japanese razors - it's simple and rugged and aesthetically very pleasing.
I took two swipes with it on today's shave (had something else planned already) and it shaves beautifully. It's so smooth! I'll probably review it after I get at least one full shave with it. I've used a japanese razor few times before and it's a bit tricky to figure out good ways to hold it given the one-sided constraints, but I most certainly can manage.
It's not intimidating at all. We've all read certain posts about japanese razors being 'wicked sharp' and almost impossible to tame, but I think a properly honed one is just the opposite. In my view OLD_SCHOOL's honing is actually more important than the razor itself (yeah I know it's a bold statement, but there are not that many guys around who have had a skilled barber teach them how to do it properly, let alone the fancy japanese stones he owns).
All in all if you want some sweet japanese hones or razors I'd say you can't go wrong with OLD_SCHOOL and if you end up getting a razor you should most certainly get him to hone it for you.

Thanked: 4942Now how do we talk Old School into doing those handles on the rest of our Japanese razors????? Sounds like a nice way to make a couple bucks and I have two for ya at least.
