    Default the 15$ find!

    So here's the story:

My wife knows how much I am obsessed with classic shaving rituals and the act of shaving with straights, honing, etc. She also knows that I love to collect and use DE razors from time to time, my favorite being the Gillette NEW and old types. Yesterday she visited a shop in Mahopac NY (a really nice place, btw, with nice people inside) and she came to my job at the bank afterwoods. She explained to me that they had about 50 straight razors and a ton of old gillettes. I ran over to the shop this morning and snagged the two things I Thought were usable. I found a Dubl duck Special #1 with virtually no rusting, I asked the guy how much for it and he told me FIVE DOLLARS. WOW!

The next find with a Gillette NEW, still in the box, and still with the gillette blue razors in their original box. I asked how much for that and I was told an astonishing TEN DOLLARS. These things go for so much on ebay, and I was very excited. Here are the pics:

So were there really 50 straights at the shop?

Was that one the only one you found worth buying?

At $5 a pop.... I probably would have walked out with a few!

I knew this would be asked. I am actually on a budget this week and the guy at the store (who I talked with for a bit about straight razors) told me they get and sell a lot of them. I told him I would come back soon and see if there were anything new.

Most of the razors (a lot of them) looked very good, but they lacked the names I know on the tang, such as sheffield, etc. A lot of them just said "Germany" ,etc on them and I was rather ignorant to if they were good. About three of them had broken scales, which I have no idea how to repair, so I skipped on them. Actually, if it wasn't for my budget this week, I would've walked out with about seven of them.

The duck looks like she's got potential. Has hone wear, but it looks pretty even.

The Gillette is a GoodWill, a variant of the NEW. Nice razor, and a great shaver if you ever use a DE.

    Default Antique Store Finds

Recently I visited one antique store and spotted a razor in a case. Dubl Duck scales, opened up the razor and someone had put a Twin Henkel blade in the scales. Blade was rusty and gaped. Asking price $35.00.

The next week I visisted another Antique store and spotted a W. Greaves & Sons Sheaf-works cast steel in good shape. Asking price $18.00.

    Go figure!

I bought the Greaves even though I am not into old big heavy wedge razors. Just thought it was too good a deal to pass up.

You're right, there is a lot of hone wear. But I think I can still get a good edge on it!

Goes to show you that none of these shops know anything about straight razors. I saw a place in Cold Spring that had a bunch of W&B wedges for up to 300.00$! And they weren't in any kind of mint condition.

Hey, I'll take that Greaves off your hands if you don't want it. I really like their blades.
