Congratulations! When I found mine, it had the same sort of little 'bumps' on the scales. They cleaned up quite easily. Probably a stupid question, just wondering if anyone could fill me in on what that might be caused by?

    Agreed, great find.

The scales are asian water buffalo horn, and the little bumps are caused by small separations of the top "laminate" layers that make up the horn. These little bumps/bubbles along the length aren't a big deal, and can be polished off with Maas and vigorous rubbing with a finger or paper towel.

They are only really a problem when they are more severe and at the edges and ends of the scales, indicating that the layers of the horn are separating and deteriorating. If the layers are really splayed out at the ends, not much can be done to save them.

Mineral or camelia (non-petroleum) oils help restore and preserve these black horn scales nicely. I rub it on generously with my finger, and set it aside overnight to soak in slowly. Then I buff it off the following day. It really restores the depth of black color, and the grain.
