at the antique mall
Since everyone has been finding great stuff at the antique mall, I thought I would give it a try. Here's what I found:
6/8 A. Fields, German Ground marked 444 3/4 on the reverse
sorry for the poor pics. The spine is about 3/16" thick. Would this be a near wedge?
Everything seems to be in excellent shape. I may polish it a bit but no rust, no pitting. minimal hone wear.
All I've found is that the founder of the company died in 1884 at the age of 70. The company may have been in production until 1919.Last edited by Pyment; 06-20-2009 at 03:28 AM.

I'd say that looks like a quarter hollow too. But then again, many blades called "wedges" are indeed quarter hollows (such as the Red Imp 132 and the SatinWedge). When it comes to what a "wedge" is, it's really up to you. I call anything that I think is fuller than a quarter hollow a wedge, others might reserve the name for true wedges.
Either, way, a very nice find.

The A. Field company had an interesting and very internatioal history, per Goins'. It is listed as having been in business from 1855-1942, and was headquartered in Sheffield, with offices in Sheffield, New York, and Solingen among other locations. Your find is a very nice razor and looks like it will be a great shaver, especially for heavy beards. Are you going to hone it yourself?

I started to hone it last night. Progress has been slow. Is there something special I should know about honing them?

I never had an A. Fields razor, so I don't know how they are to hone. Please et us know! What kind of progression are you using?
