LV to NYC finds
We tried to make good time, and only stopped twice to peak in antique shops. Can anyone tell me about the DE? It says Gillette, I'm not a DE user but someone thought I should shine it up nice. The other, 40 Comfort Friedr, Baurmann & Söhne, is in pretty good condition. I just worked on the edge a bit, removing some micro chips and resetting the bevel, I'll see how it shaves at a later date, might keep it, might not. Thoughts? Questions?

That is a "New Gillette Safety Razor". I believe it is only the second model, released sometime in the early 1930's. I have one, and it's my go-to for a fast shave. Great little razors...

I don't know anything about the DE, but I just bought a Comfort razor about two weeks ago at an antique fair for $5. Plain black bakelite scales. Very nice scales on your razor. I'm thinking it was rescaled. The file or grind mark you see and the pin material and appearance make me think that. I have a handful of razors with interesting scales where they were obviously repinned by someone who wanted to keep the nice scales going on another razor.
Those scales are so sweet though, you could probably pin them on something a cat would leave in the litterbox and it would probably fetch more than you paid for it. I'm not saying the blade is crap either, my point is simply that I don't think the blade is original to the scales.

tried to respond, didn't work, will try again... and.. ACTION!
Yeah the scales are very pretty indeed, no packaging
There was one razor at the same antique mall that was honed to the bone old and no good, but the scales were probably bone and even more intricately carved than these, the seller wanted 150 bucks for it! BWAH!?!
Like I said, I don't know anything about DE and am not particularly attracted to the idea... but I have some DE blades someone gifted me and I might throw them in there to kick around my face some time... (rhetorical question alert) how much do these things even sell for?Last edited by bassguy; 08-20-2009 at 12:55 PM.

So Justin,
Let me get this straight, you move accross the country to the Big Apple and you are looking for razors on the way? That is what I love about SRP community. Most folks doing a life changing move would be so stressed. Way to keep the big picture in perspective!! Awesome looking scales on the straight.

But of course! Priorities is priorities!
I really get a lot out of the transformation from cloudy and rusty to gleaming and sharp, and I saw the cross country trek immediately as an opportunity to visit Smallville USA and find a hidden gem...
I keep my eye out for musical instruments too... but they're harder to transport in an overstuffed station wagon.

If Socrates had a nice razor your sig might be something like:
I only know one thing I don't know anything but a good shave is all I need to know
Justin how do you collect basses! I mean I can stuff a dozen fiddles on a book case, or a half dozen violas. Wish you best in NYC.
