    Default My Pipes

While I had my camera out and the lights on, I thought I'd snap some shots of my pipes too. I'm quite partial to Karl Erik's, the first four are by him.

The first (two pics) is a grade 0 (from the numerical grading which went from 0-5 with 0 being the best) sitter that is carved asymmetrically in order to fin into the right hand. The grain is nothing all that special, but she's a "sitter" (sits up on her own), and I quite like that.

The second (two pics) is a grade B (from AAA to C with AAA being the best) with some nice grain to her. There are a few rusticated spots that I don't care for, but on the whole, I like her a lot.

The third (one pic) is an ungraded Karl Erik (newest production I think) with some nice grain - looks windswept.

The forth is a grade 2 with mostly straight grain. I thought she was a sitter based on pics, but it turns out she's not. I'm still very happy with her; I like the odd shape.

The fifth (two pics) is a Chacom sitter. This was the good pipe that I bought. I like that she's a sitter, but I'm not wild about her being so straight.

Fooled me! I was expecting to see some deliriously mint Wosty's, which I am a bit short on these days. Nice pipes, though-beautiful wood. Do you tamp them with the Belgian combination stone pictured? Sure and that would smooth out the smoke!

I do have a wosty up for sale, but these are indeed smoking pipes. That slurry is actually a Charnly Forest/Dragon's tongue, just there to help them stand up.

    Nice looking pipes.
As soon as I saw the first one, I was thinking Elephant Man.

Very nice collection, Alex. I'd like to get myself a Churchwarden one of these days.

I must ask, is it the Swedish pipemaker Karl Erik? I read about him in the local newspaper not long ago, a true artisan!

Sorry my bad, it was Bo Nordh I was thinking about!

Bo Nordh is dead sorry to say. For some years now. Even when he was alive one of his pipes cost thousands of dollars. Now that he is gone I hesitate to think what one in fine condition would bring. The same with Sixten Ivarrson.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.
