Two Hones I Bought - Escher?
I hit some antique stores today. I got one Simplex barber hone. I don't know anything about them but it's in good shape, so I grabbed it. It measures 2"x4-1/2."
I also got what I think is an Escher but I'm not sure. The text on the box lid says "German Make." It also says, "The Fox No. 44. Extra Soft Water Hone & Rubber. The only hone that will not put a wire edge on your razor." It measures 1-1/2"x7."
If anyone can tell me more about these hones I would appreciate it. Thanks. Here are some pictures.

I don't know about the Simplex but I have heard that Fox was a brand that was actually an Escher. At least it is certainly a quality Thuringan if not an Escher and nice to find complete with the rubbing stone.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

A Simplex was the first razor hone I got, yours is in better shape and mine had no box. It works well though I find the edge it puts on a little scratchy. I covet your other find, nice one.

Great find!
If not an Esher itis certainly Ta huringan, probably from the same mine. There areso many Barber's hones around it's hard to know about all of them. Lap it up and give it a try.

It looks just like my antique store Escher, and the rubber stone too. Same color, and mine came with the label. Congratulations! You will know as soon as you hone some razors on it, by the great smooth and close shaves.

Thanked: 108Fox is one of the classic brands of "escher" (i.e. vintage thuringian). Great find.

Very nice score, Kent. It's extremely rare to find Thuringian stones which still have their matching slurry stones aka "rubber".
I have a brown colored Fox hone that claims it's the best in the world. Sham thinks it may be the fabled "brown escher". Your Fox hone is significantly larger than the one I have and a completely different color.

Another one which is now cleared in my point of view. Iam not sure if it was unclear for all the others posting pictures of the No. 44 Extra Soft Fox Water Hone here. But for me it was unclear till today who brought up these stones into the market. ]
A of good friend of mine (Oliver) had the chance to buy that nice Fox Water Hone. It was sold in Germany. Its the first No. 44 Extra Soft Fox Water Hone ive seen which refers directly to the Fox Cutlerly as you can see on its label.
More on the Fox Cutlerly can be found here:
