Antique store purchase...tell me what you think
I been going to lots of local flea markets lately and finding nothing but Kriegars (sp?) and orange country chopper straights. It was tempting....but i respectfully passed paying 15 bucks for a straight blade with flames and motorcycles on it.
Anyways, I decided to go to the local antique mall to look around today. I found quite a few straight razors, im still somewhat new to this, so i would like feedback regarding what i bought.
This is a "Biltmore" boar brush, I payed 15 bucks for it...after a shampoo and conditioning treatment it feels pretty soft. Havent used it yet, but im looking forward to giving it a try. Obviously it wont come close to my Shavemac
Unfortunately, I didnt have much time to look around at all the razors they were closing in about 20 minutes. But i knew i wanted to buy something...i saw a few w&bs, well above 100 each. Then i noticed this Torrey, which is a name i have seen thrown around here and on the classifieds. I paid 30 dollars for it. I liked the color of the scales, and the shape of the blade. Unfortunately i dont know how to measure or i could give you some more detail...but it is smaller than my 6/8 dovo.
Anyways, I would greatly appreciate it if the expert eyes here could lend me a hand. What do you think...did i spend too much?
Also, im sending the Torrey in to Rayman for honing. Along with 3 other blades. It is dull as can be

Thanked: 137By the looks of it it used to be a round point but has had the toe broken somewhat. I personally wouldn't pay that much for it, but it's all a matter of personal taste. Is there much pitting underneath that patina?

The quality of the pic isnt that great...the toe isnt broken. ITs more of a notch in the blade...i dont know if thats called a french point or not. I thought the same thing when i looked at the picture, it just came out odd. Sorry, but i dont know what you mean by pitting under the patina

By patina, he means the rather uniform blackening of the blade. It looks to me like there probably isn't much pitting under there, or maybe just some shallow stuff, but hard to say from the pic.
For what it's worth, I think the toe has been modified in some way. A notch that sticks outward is not normal. Still, the edge looks pretty straight, so she'll prolly be a shaver, and since Torrey is a good maker, she'll probably be a good shaver.

Well overall the blade just seems darkened to me...which i kinda like oddly enough. The blade is pretty smooth to the touch. As far as the toe goes...im not really sure, i know its not a chip though. Ive seen plenty of horribly chipped up blades before and this one was either manufactured this way, or altered to look that way. Im sending it out to be honed so im hoping it shaves well.

I like the brush!! The price for the Torrey is not bad! I have spent up to 90 bucks for a nice Torrey. Have at least 3 Torrey's!
