    Default A New Monster Hone

So I got a new Japanese Natural from my barber today...it's enormous, in my opinion...20.5cmx7.3cmx3.6 (8.1x2.9x1.4 in inches). It's like a brick...and it is so pretty.

When I got it, it was a testament to how far a barber can take a stone without lapping. There was a groove a good 2mm deep, in just the right width to fit the head of a kamisori...he had worn it down over YEARS of sharpening Japanese razors on it, I reckon...judging by the fact that it took me over an hour of lapping with a 400 grit diamond plate to get past it, it's not a particularly soft hone.

It looks like a Kiita with Nashiji to me, but that's just from looking at the pictures around here.

Here are some pics, pre and post lap.

Was that the prize for the three successfully honed razor? Anyways, congratulations for your brick. . I'm glad that you can learn from the barber and the barber can see continuation of his work in you.

That stone looks most interesting. That is propable very handy to use because of the size. Can you say anything about the grit?
I can easily believe that it wasn't one of the easiest to get lapped

This puppy is all cranked up and you have a shelf of already honed razors!

Good deal. That's a HUGE stone and you could cut that thing into about 4 other hones.

And then send one to me...you know, for comparative purposes.

Yes, it was. He seems to have taken pity on me...or he was just toyig with me. Both are equally plausible--he's a bit of a joker.

I can't say anything about the grit, as I've never used it and it's a natural stone, but it's probably very fine. He was extremely proud of it.

I am indeed a very lucky person. In many ways, much more than I deserve.

More hones than I need? More hones than I NEED? Sorry...does not compute.
