Default the soligren that i almost bought.

I felt as i should tell you this story of heartache and loss, so the other members can sob along with me. here it goes.
I went into my kinda local antique shop this afternoon, hopeing to find something i havent seen yet, and came across this razor box with soligren stamped on the outside, for 5 bucks. Well needless to say my heart jumped, the thought of a possible diamond find was giving me shivers. The store worker opened the cabinet, and i opened the box. Well to make the story a little short, lets say i was looking at a 5 dollar box, cause the razor inside was nothing short of ruined. when i pulled the top off the box, part of the scales came with it. the blade was so rusted, that i dont believe there would have been any way to save it, and for you folks who do more restore's than i could ever dream of doing, you would have pretty much chucked it into the bin the moment you held it. the rust layer looked like mud to me. all i could do was put the top back on the box, and put it back, silently sobbing at the loss of a wonderful old blade.

It sounds like that razor was probably the victim of celluloid rot. Unless a razor has been subjected to constant dampness, it shouldn't rust that badly. If the box was in reasonable condition and didn't show any obvious signs of water damage, that razor was probably rusted by exposure to celluloid in the scales breaking down and emitting a toxic gas that will consume the metal.

    Too bad!

that would explain what i saw, the box was in very good shape. it was to bad about the razor, i dont believe there would have been any metal left after you went to work and sanded on it, that is how far it was gone.

I know what you mean. Here is a Kobar from Solingen that came with a group of razors I bought. It was from a seven-day set and was eat up with cel rot. Nothing to be done with it except to toss it out.

    Regards - Walt
