    Default My New "Prima Klang"

Here is a photo of my brand new Dovo "Prima Klang" w/ Violetwood scales that I purchased from SRD. It was delivered "shave ready" by the honemeister himself Lynn Abrams. Thanks Lynn...

Good luck with that one. Very nice razor, but the extreme flexibility of the blade makes for an interesting shaving experience

    Thank you for sharing,
    Robin

    Robin,

    Thank you for the encouragement.

In fact, I had great luck with it this morning. Experienced one of the best shaves ever in my brief experience with str8 razor shaving. It scythed through my two day growth of beard like a Samurai sword through butter.

Default How to handle "interesting shave" as a beginner

Thanks for a leading comment there, Robin.

As it happens, I'm a rank beginner with a straight razor, started with DE about two months ago after years of beardedness 'cos everything else I'd experienced gave me horrible rashes (dark red beard, soft white skin).

Anyway - my first razor is a Prima Klang, and I've been having a bit of trouble. I believe it's properly honed, it was bought reconditioned from Invisible Edge in UK.

My beard prep is fairly thorough, but I've had trouble with feeling like the edge is "grabbing", and research tonight on the net leads me to think I'm not controlling the movement properly. Then I found your comment about the thinness making it an "interesting" shave.

Any hints for a beginner on using a thin blade like this one?

    Cheers, Simon.

Simon, my experience was much like yours as a new straight user. The Prima Klang is extra hollow, and as Robin has indicated they are interesting.

I sold mine as I didn't like the shave. But as a now much more experienced straight user I rather wish I'd kept it, even though I prefer blades larger than 5/8ths.

Hollow ground razors just seem to require more experience and better technique, and 'singing razors even more so. All this comes in time.

You may wish to set this one aside for a year and in the mean time use a half hollow while you gain experience and develop technique.

Perhaps not what you want to hear, and others may disagree. I'm simply relaying my personal experience.

I really like the Prima Klang I have and the shave it gives. It shouldn't be grabbing your whiskers. If that is happening there is certainly a good chance that it needs a better honing job. However, it will certainly feel different in your shave than the DE you've been using. I find that I feel the blade more when straight shaving as opposed to DE shaving. It could just be that and the edge be ok.

Take your time with the blade and work on your technique. It takes a few months to really tune in to the proper technique for using a straight razor.

Looks like a great blade, thanks for the photo!
