As for sterilizing the blades...I would just wipe them down with some alcohol, then rinse the blades in warm/hot water, then dry them thoroughly.

Don't put alcohol or water on the scales, though.
Thanks, JH. Much appreciated on BOTH the advice and "congrat's".

I just want to let you all know that my greenie, inexperienced hands did NOT shake the first time I used the Henckels I just got. Man that 401 is nnice!!! Shave's like a dream - now - after a pyramid on the Norton, about 20 laps on the chinese 12,000, about 20 laps on the fabric side of the strop (with .5 cr ox) and a final 50 laps on the hide side.

Whoa! is all I can say for how that baby shaves. Damn nice, indeed! She's a keeper, I'm afraid. No selling that one. That's gonna be my contribution to "heirlooms" for MY SON! I am building his collection now so he's gonna have some nice ones to have when I am past tense!

I think we "lucked out" with some "beginners luck" and did good on the prices/choices/selections I just made!!

    Cheers, all...........

I enjoy my Henckels also. Haven't found one I really don't like. And like you, I am building my heirlooms for my son for when I am past tense.

Good luck on building the collection and enjoy them while you are still present tense.

Here's a display picture I took recently of one of my most recent auction acquisitions. It is my "original trademarked Bismarck" razor.

    The tang reads:
Bismarck Razor Works - Solingen Germany
and there is a "registered" stamp on the monkey tail, as well.

My camera sucks so I'm sorry if you cannot see those stampings in the metal.

    In the picture are:
*The World of Straight Razor Shaving by Lynn Abrams
    *Proaso "splash" aftershave
    *Prosaso "pre/post-shave" cream
    *Simpson 100% pure Badger brush
    *D.R.Harris shaving soap (Marlborough)
    *
*The box from my new Dovo "Bismarck" with no reference to Dovo anywhere on it.

    Cheers!
    ~Phil

    PS......
I hand polished it (no Dremel) for about three hours off & on to get it to shine the way it does. Handle included.

This is the latest entry to my "stable" of thoroughbred razors. Not pristine but satisfactory. I think I have my 7 day set now, for rotation purposes.

You are looking at a Heinr Boker, "Bokers Special" 5/8th's round point.
Lt yellow - almost cream color, celluloid scales. Unknown year.

There is some pitting in blade at the toe at the top near the spine - both sides. A very small, micro-chip in handle. Blade etching is still visible, but very, very light. Especially after I polished the blade with MAAS to get some previous steel wool (or emery paper) scratches out. And there's an unknown stain IN the scale. You can see it. It's the dark orange-ish spot on the end. Would NOT polish out. I think it's stained into the scale - whatever it is.

    Better pictures to come.......

    Default Fixed a nice razor..

This is a recent restoration. It came to me with a pretty huge chip outta the blade. After "butter-knifing" it (some say "bread knife") I replaced the bevel and sharpened it.

I must say it's a great shaver, now! It's in my regular, weekly rotation.

Additionally, FYI, this is my very FIRST "restore" on a str8. Never did it before this C-Mon. I think I did "ok".

When I put a razor in hot soapy water to sanitize it, it was a disaster the scale went from black to a olive green

Sounds like Vulcanite scales. Others have had this happen before. From what I hear, there is no return to black. Be glad it wasnt the blade!
