My guess would be either aluminum or pewter. I can't tell since I'm sorely lacking in metalurgy. With my limited knowledge, it doesn't "feel" like silver to me.

The database has been cruel to me, Robin. I've submitted some razors in the past, but seemed to have to fight the system to log in. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. It frustrated me to the point that if there is a separate log in, I have no idea what it would be at this point.

That is the most beautiful set of aluminum scales I ever saw-sincere congratulations. If they were pewter they would be very heavy due to the lead content. I have a couple of aluminum scaled razors, and from what I have read they had their heyday in the 1920's. Great, great score!

Thanks for the info. Given your knowledge which I appreciate, your compliment means much to me. Yes, the scales are light. The blade is light and nimble as well, so there is no imbalance. The level of detail in the scales is truly impressive. I tried to show that in one of the photos; there is a vine that wraps around the stalk of the flower plant. The vine is so thin yet so distinct.

Arghh! I couldn't afford to buy that many strops! The nick wasn't that severe and thankfully I was able to sand it out with problem.

Aw shucks, I don't know nuthin'! Every once in a while, you see a razor with sterling silver engraved scales, such as the incredibly rare Tiffany straight razors. They are beautiful, but I have not seen one so nicely engraved as yours. And, when aluminum was newly discovered and before newer refining processes, it was very, very expensive. You have a treasure there and we all know it! From Wikipedia:
Although aluminium is the most abundant metallic element in the Earth's crust, it is never found in free, metallic form, and it was once considered a precious metal more valuable than gold. Napoleon III, Emperor of France, is reputed to have given a banquet where the most honoured guests were given aluminium utensils, while the others had to make do with gold.[16][17] The Washington Monument was completed, with the 100 ounce (2.8 kg) aluminium capstone being put in place on December 6, 1884, in an elaborate dedication ceremony. It was the largest single piece of aluminium cast at the time, when aluminium was as expensive as silver.[18] Aluminium has been produced in commercial quantities for just over 100 years.
