Thanked: 68Sheffield - unbranded wedge
Hi.
Have just purchased an old unbranded wedge.
Was looking for a barber notch and have ended up with a wedge as a bonus.
Would be keen to have some feedback on this blade. It appears to taper from 6/8 at the heel to 5/8 at the toe.
Is it likely to clean up & take an edge ok?
Are the scales ok or would it be better to re-scale? - provided the blade is ok.
Thanks
The tang is only stamped on one side.
The blade appears to have some fairly major hone wear (I know next to nothing about wedges) but is hopefully able to be resurrected.
The scales appear to be organic ? ivory or bone ?
And are unevenly worn at the scale wedge.

Thanked: 3795The nice thing about wedges is they are easier to clean up because there is little risk of breaking them, in contrast to full hollows. The only way to know if it will take an edge will be to clean it up, hone it, and shave with it. Odds are that is will do just fine.
I don't see anything wrong with the scales. It's always nice to keep the stuff original so if they are in as good of shape as they appear, you should be able to keep them intact.
Have fun working on it!

Those scales look to be bone to me, based on the pores.
That is a lot of hone wear - the blade probably used to be a bit wider. I have a ****hill that has similar hone wear, and I've put her aside because it was taking so long to get a bevel on her (I never got the bevel set...). I'm sure your razor would be a great shaver if you got an edge on her, but be prepared to spend a lot of time.

You will have trouble at those black "stains" at the edge which are actually pitting but you may get to good metal eventually. Don't know till you try

Wow that looks like a very wedgy wedge Does the honewear at the spine meet the honewear at the edge?

Thanked: 68Initial Clean
Have done an initial clean using a kitchen scourer and laundry soap - looking better already.
The hone wear on the stamped side appears to be almost meeting at the toe.

Thanked: 2209It sure looks like that to me!
To the OP....what we are noticing is extreme wear on the toe end. If that were my razor I would not even try to hone it. What it really needs is an actual regrind to give it some concave shape to the blade. Trying to hone this would be pointless because at the toe end the bevel would extend from the edge all the way to the spine.
