First that's a great catch. About the gold wash you can polish the areas around the gold wash with a dremel and a felt pad if your careful. The area inside the gold wash will be a bit darker. I used the dremel and felt pad taking tiny passes. It looks pretty darn good, but as you stated, the inside is slightly darker.
