Miscellaneous antique store finds
We searched some antiques stores in the area yesterday and found these.
I've not heard of a couple of the brands, but bought them anyway as I'd rather not learn to hone on my good razors
First pic is "before", second is after some light clean-up. The blades don't look as pretty as they are as I took the second pic with a moderate coat of Camelia oil left in place.
Razors (left to right on second picture):
1. Allegheny Instrument company - it's obviously been overhoned at the toe, but I have a Robeson's that looks similar and is still a nice shaver.
2. Shumate Safeguard - odd shape; I've never seen a razor with this shape, and this short of a blade. There's an odd drilled hole in the toe end of the spine. Anyone have any ideas why it may be there???
3. Joseph Elliot's Best Silver Steel (has a C+C beside it with the first "C" being backwards). This razor is in good shape and took minimal cleanup.
4. Robeson's - The scales are made of an almost "rubbery" material, matte finish. This is a pretty razor, but I'm a little worried about it. There is some devil's pit that I got the rust out of in the middle of the blade, worse on one side than the other. There is a small amount of pit on the beveled edge that I'm hoping will be removed when I reset the bevel.
5. This is a Boker, I believe. The tang reads "H. B. & Co." and has a tree logo. On the reverse it says "C. W. Hackett Hardware Co." Scales are a little loose, but otherwise this razor's in really good shape.

Congrats in a nice haul. Makes me want to get to the local shops right now. Ah, but the shops are closed. Maybe tomorrow.

Nice scores, and even better that they were local.
That Safeguard would have come with a guard that would have a piece that sits in the gap at the heal and screw into the tip of the razor. Genco made similar razors, too.

Another question
Anyone know what the C+C is on the Joseph Elliot razor? It's not really a "+" sign, more of an Iron Cross shape. The first "C" is backwards.
BTW, I honed the Allegheny last night & shaved with it this a.m. - see SOTD:

And that's not all...
I've been so "beat down" from walking into antique malls, asking if they have any str8's and either hearing "no" or having them take me to the display case, me getting all excited, only to find totally trashed razors.
It was a pleasant surprise to actually find some worthy of purchase.
The really sad thing is there was a beautiful, flawless Torrey for sale too. The problem? It was part of a gentlemen's grooming kit handsomely housed in a Tiffany & Co. leather box with brushes, mirror, etc. that matched the scales. Obviously, they wouldn't sell the razor separately, and they wanted too much for the entire set. Oh well, you can't win them all.
Can't wait for CarrieM's creams to get here - just got the email this a.m. saying they've been shipped.
