Maher & Grosh
My recent acquisition from the Bay was this 13/16" Maher & Grosh, Radium Steel, Extra Hard. I won it for a song (snipe when I least expected).
I am not crazy about the scales and as such will be going to Max for a restore/rescale. There's good amount of etching remaining and I hope that buffing the patina/pitting will keep most of it intact.
I just wanted to find out if anyone knew anything about the maker/manufacturer? I know they started business from 1875 in Ohio, but other than that, don't know much more about this blade.
Any information will be appreciated...Was this a good purchase or a bad one?
Thanks guys

Thanked: 3795Very nice! I've honed a couple of Maher & Grosh razors but they were both 4/8. They were both excellent shavers. Yours should clean up very nicely. It also appears to have the distinction of being what could be called a 3/4 hollow, as it appears to have no belly.

Thanks Ron ...I wasn't sure what I was getting myself into, but my gut said to go for it. I was worried about it cleaning up...It seems like I may have made the right choice. I think you are right about the grind...I thought near wedge, but lack of belly would probably be better categorized as 3/4 hollow.

Very nice find Robert, these are great shavers. I am sure you'll love her once you get her cleaned up.

Thanked: 3795Actually, I'm sorry I wasn't baiting you, but now on looking at it again I guess I'd call it a 1/2 hollow. Clearly I'm waffling so others are welcome to tell me I'm wrong/confused.
I can't tell how deep the pitting is but hopefully it's shallow and the etching can be preserved. Regardless of the eventual aesthetics, it should be a great shaver.

Caution, this post contains a joke. Hence the smiley.
That razor is clearly a 673/1000 hollow. Only a Utopian would call it otherwise! :-)
