Recent Gillette and Wade & Butcher DE finds
Hi,
I recently bought 2 vintage DE's. One is a 1960 Gillette 3 piece tech and the other is Wade & Butcher DE Safety razor. The Wade & Butcher came with one heave duty blade. It looks reusable. Anyone know what kind of hone to use on this blade? See photos.

Thanked: 11Hello Mike,
That Wade and Butcher looks neat. I didn't even know they made DE razors. BTW, do regular DE blades fit and how does it shave?
Thanks,
Mike

Yeah, I've got one of those NIB. They were made in Jersey City after Dunham Duplex bought W&B out probably in the '50s or '60s. For the W&B completest only as they are not viable shavers since blades are unavailable. I tried shaving with mine with a NOS blade and they weren't pleasant.
Years ago there were DE blade hones made. You see them on the bay, usually our of glass and small hand held concave things. I've heard of guys using a water glass but I've never tried to hone a DE blade.Last edited by JimmyHAD; 12-19-2010 at 03:57 PM. Reason: why not?
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Hi,
Hmm. That puts a damper on that. I have seen the DE hones on ebay but they are for the flat and thin vintage blades that have flex to them. The concave hone shape and pressing the blade into it, sets the bevel angle for honing. Like you said, you can even do this with a glass or coffee cup. However, These WB blades are stiff and do not flex. They would need some special attention to hone or strop them razor sharp.
I guess I'll just keep it for now.
Thanks for the approximate dating info too.

Thanked: 480If you dont mind taking a chance, I would enjoy the challenge of trying to hone that blade. My fee would be letting me get a shave from it!
