    Default Monster Hunting!

Went to a local haunt and found a HUGE WM Gregory & Sons razor. Comes in just shy of 8/8. I tried to get some info on the company, but it looks like one of the razor databases is down, so if anybody knows anything about the company it would be greatly appreciated. Only thing I can get was that it most likely manufactured in the late 1880's-early 1890.

For comparison, I it sits between a 7/8 Wade & Butcher and a 4/8 Henckels.

    Blade shot...

Not stamped England, Before 1890 probably, nice blade!

Off subject but hey Geezer, thanks, I have a couple razors that just say Sheffield and was trying to remember the date when the word England became mandatory.

Back to OP. The Wm Gregory is quite a chunk of metal to be sure. As at home chopping firewood as it is shaving. And when you're done, it can also be used as a home defense weapon.

Can't tell you anything about the company I'm afraid. I've got one of those as well tho. Mine is a little different; 6/8 half wedge, rounded spike (not sure if that was original or if someone adjusted it along the way), nice fat tang w jimps top and bottom. Blade stamped All Right Hollow Ground, with the tang stamped "W. Gregory & Son" in an arch above "All (logo) Right, and then Sheffield below. Same axe-saw logo as yours on the blade, but mine has different fonts on the blade. Mine doesn't say England either, so I anticipated mine being prior to 1895. However, judging by the ornamented fonts on your blade face (mine are reminiscent of Arial perhaps) yours seem older than mine. Just a suspicion, I can't back it up with hard facts.

Some pitting on mine made me scrub a bit into the stamping, it is now easy enough to see while holding it in hand, but alas not so easy to photograph it well.

    Goins says:

    WILLIAM GREGORY & SONS SHEFFIELD c 1858-1953
A trademark used by John Petty & Sons.

Info on John Petty & Sons:
Same time frame. Located at the Perth Works, Garden Street, Sheffield, England. They took over the businesses of William Gregory & Joseph Mills. This company manufactured "Bowie" type knives, among other kinds of cutlery.

The logo ont he tang with the "w"hammer"g" has 1858 under it, so it's more than likely around that time frame.
