John & Wm Ragg 11/16
Ok, so I think I'm showing some of the early symptoms of RAD, but I had a little browse through the antiques stores today and cam away with this;
I just used my gut feeling and a little common sense to pick this one out as a reasonable purchase for £8.50 (a touch under $14).
I am however still very much learning what is and isn't good, so please fire away with your opinions on my purchase!
Does anyone else have a Ragg razor, and if so is it any good?
I plan on cleaning her up, and probably having a professional honing at some point as long as I haven't bought a complete dog lol!
I've done some preliminary digging around and know that John and William Ragg produced razors from 1825 to 1953 in Sheffield, but is anyone able to tell from the style roughly where in this period this example fits?
Box is not original, it's for a 'Tuckmar' - so if anyone needs an original tuckmar box let me know!
All thoughts and comments greatly appreciated as usual
Cheers

I have no info on the origins however IMHO it looks like it is a prime candicate for a restore; very little hone wear (if any), plenty of meat left on the blade, nice deep stamp and no major corrosion near the edge.
Anyway, nice buy for $14.

Update time
Well I'm a little on the impatient side it must be said, and despite not quite having all the materials I really need to begin the restore yet, here's the progress;
That's as far as I'm able to take it atm, upto 1200grit, but I will be out on the purchasing prowl tomorrow!
I think I spent roughly 2hrs bringing her to this stage, and I don't think I've done any damage, certainly nothing irreparable!
This is the first time I've attempted anything like this, so go easy on me lol, but please do say if you can see something I've done wrong also.
Thanks for looking

Thanked: 65The scales appear to be pressed fiber. If so, be careful with them.

Nice razor!
I have a Sheffield under the name John Wragg.
Is it the same factory?

Thanked: 21Good to go! I can't see anything you did 'wrong.' I don't think you need to go further with the sanding but it's your call.
