My RAD, let me show you it.
So today I got back the razors I sent to Lynn for honing. (VERY happy!)
I put them on my desk and I noticed something.
I've got a WHOLE LOT of razors. Dang. I'm sure it's nothing compared to some of you folks, but I've only been at this for two and a half months.
For the curious, going counter-clockwise and starting at the pile of flush-cutters we gots here:
- Campbell Mfg. Co, Chicago
- Joseph Rodgers & Sons, Cutlers to Their Majesties (prior to the England stamp)
- Clauss, 1920's
- Wade & Butcher, 'Manufactured by Wade & Butcher, Sheffield' no other marks
- Salamander Wedge
- Completely unmarked 4/8 spike point
- Hackett, Walther & Gates Hdwe, St. Paul Minn 'Try Me' blade etching
- Wm. Elliot, cowboy & buffalo inlay. In real dodgy shape
- Wm. Elliot, MOP inlay, waiting for scale-work and silver pins
- Wade & Butcher naked blade, no other visible marks, but there was a very faint suggestion of a logo lost amidst the hone wear on the spine
- Engels, LEADER. Scales disintegrated but I've still got all the inlays
- Clauss, 4/8 spike. Waiting for the scales to get repainted and the blade cleaned.
- Cosmo M'F'G. Co 'Germany', 'Barbers Choice, Hollow Ground' etched on blade. Scales are non-repairably busted
- Imperial Razor, Warrented, Germany. Etching of a tandem bicycle on the blade with 'Imperial Safety'. Waiting for me to get a brass tumbler
- Dubl Duck 'Satin Wedge'. Blade was in awful shape when I got it, probably celluloid rot, since everything below the scales was hairy rust.
- Wade & Butcher 'GR' stamp next to 'Universally Approved', circa 1820-1830. Waiting for me to get more restoration chops
- W. Greaves & Sons, Warrented. Got it from AntiqueHoosier here. Circa 1810-1826. Likewise awaiting my chops.
- Joseph Rodgers. 9/16th, England stamp (meaning 1891-1910), ivory scales. Work in progress.
And I've got one more coming. I got it cheap off eBay, don't know much about it other than that it has 'Hobson's Choice' etched on the blade.
The RAD must be abating though, I turned down to antique store razors today on the basis that neither would've added anything new to the collection.-Zak Jarvis. Writer. Artist. Bon vivant.

Need vs. want... I only have to shave every three days. If I shave every other day you would never see my 5 o'clock shadow. Shaving daily is something I do because I like it (5 days a week. no shave Monday or Thursday) So I only need 2 maybe 3 razors. I want all of them I can get my grubby little hands on, and so far I am doing pretty good at that. Even though I have not bought off ebay since I joined the forum. I like hitting yard sales. antique stores, and flea markets....thrill of the hunt.

I grew a gigantic beard I disliked shaving so much. Most of that was because the waste of cartridges offended me. I think it was the vibrating razors that were the final straw.
The terrible irony is that the main reason I got into straights was because I was annoyed by the amount of money I spent on cartridges.
At least I tend to only spend about the same amount on any given razor as I'd spend on a package of cartridges. Plus the razors I buy need cleaning and work, which is pretty constantly rewarding and keeps me working with my hands for something other than typing. Since taking up the life of the writer, I've kind of missed that kind of physical problem-solving that goes into working on things.
I'm still getting some stuff of eBay, but mostly I browse it now for oddities and trash razors that I can perform wicked experiments on.-Zak Jarvis. Writer. Artist. Bon vivant.

The official formula for how many razors you need is:
R= F (N x 44) + S ( R + B)
where:
R= How many razors required
F= How many faces one has
N= Number of faces if two-faced
S= Spare razors needed
R= Razors needing restoration
B= Back-up razors honed and ready to go
You can't have too many razors.
Other people can have too many razors.
Those people should sell their surplus to you.
You can always get another wife/job/loan.
You can always get more razors and have a duty to do so.

Fine start to a fine collection!! I only have 13 that are shave ready, and 5 more needing restoring or honing.
I've been at it 4 months!!
We all have RAD, rookies can't help it. I'm slowing down though, and only buying razors I really want to have one of now. I'll sell off razors I don't like, or can't shave well with, and keep trying new (old razors) brands until I have a collection I really enjoy shaving with.
I just got my first honed Genco in the mail today!! I'm going to shave with it as soon as I get off of this darned computer!!
Good collection, enjoy!!!
M-- Any day I get out of bed, and the first thing out of my mouth is not a groan, that's going to be a good day --
