Clauss with MOP Tang
So I've been mostly shaving and not restoring for a bit, and I hadn't gotten any new (old) razors in almost a month. But of course I keep an eye on ebay.
A bunch of lots came up and I ended up bringing in something like 14 razors in 3 days.
The time has come, says me to my brain, to get some stuff that I can fix up and sell. This hobby needs to support itself if I'm to get the kind of razors I really want (really old and in really good shape).
In amongst a lot of 6 razors, some of which are nice, some of which are trashed, was this Clauss.
The seller said it was a real nice one and the seller was right.
Mother of pearl covered tang, blade etching, very hollow. Nice stuff, in fact, I've never really seen a Clauss quite like it.
But the scales were deadly boring hard rubber and they snapped when I was working to unpin them for cleaning.
Now I've got this Joseph Rodgers with ivory scales, but the blade has been a real problem child for honing.
Plus, I've got one of Ogershok's razors here to repin.
I thought to myself, I should practice a little before I work on his razor.
This is the result.
I've done some minimal cleanup, but I haven't yet done the full white-glove on it.
Mind you, I have shaved with it. Out of the USPS box, onto my DMT 8k, about 20 strokes, and it's consistently giving me some of the best shaves I've had.
There's a bit of a rough spot where I had to grind that little shoulder flange -- it stuck out far enough to hit the scales and make it center badly, plus I didn't get all the grime out of the joins on the tang, but man is this is a nice razor.
I don't think I'll be selling this one.-Zak Jarvis. Writer. Artist. Bon vivant.
